The Northern Sydney Child Protection Service

The Northern Sydney Child Protection Service (NSCPS) is based at Royal North Shore Hospital. NSCPS is part of Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health Service.

Staff members provide assessment and therapy for children and adolescents referred to the Service by the Department of Community Services (DoCS).

The children and young people we see have experienced physical, sexual or emotional abuse or significant neglect. We also assist some parents to improve their parenting techniques. The therapies provided at NSCPS are designed to help children recover from abuse as quickly and as much as possible.

Cornucopia helps us help abused children at NSCPS in many ways.

Play Therapy

Some children find it hard to talk about their experiences or their feelings. Special techniques such as Play Therapy may help them. Cornucopia provided a range of up-to-date therapeutic aids to help these children express a range of complex and difficult emotions.

Play Therapy helps children with limited vocabulary find the words to describe complex and often contradictory feelings. It teaches them to use toys, puppets and other items instead of words to ‘talk’ about their experiences, fears and hopes.

Through this process children learn to utilise their inner strengths and to build resilience.

Resources for parents

Not all victims of child abuse are children. Parents are often devastated by what has happened. Cornucopia helps us, in practical ways, to help them too.

Transporting children to and from vital health services can be logistically and financially difficult. Through Cornucopia we are able to fund transport to and from appointments when necessary. A simple thing like a bus or taxi fare can make a big difference ensuring a child and family can access life-changing support that might otherwise have been impractical.

Parents provide some of the most effective therapy. We teach parents how to help their children with the aid of specialised children’s books and games supplied with the help of Cornucopia, Many parents can’t afford these vital aids.

Professional resources

Highly qualified and experienced child and family counsellors staff NSCPS. They specialise in helping abused children, adolescents and their families. The reports and expert opinions provided to DoCS and to courts, by these professionals assist in deciding how best to protect and help children in the future.

It is vital that our staff keep up to date with therapeutic innovations and the latest research. Cornucopia supports this by funding the purchase of professional texts and specialist journal publications.

Thanks to Cornucopia we now have access to an impressive up-to-date professional library. Our Counsellors are committed to ongoing professional development and maintaining the best possible standards of professional practice.

Our knowledge and practice of innovative evidence-based therapeutic techniques directly benefits our clients. Cornucopia makes it possible for our Counsellors to attend highly specialised child protection-related training and conferences.
